What can be
done to prevent or remove viruses?
- UNI offers free anti-virus
software to all enrolled students. Click
here to download Symantec AntiVirus. Be sure to install the ResNet version and uninstall any previous anti-virus software you have before installing this version.
- Reformatting your
computer is always the best option to ensure a virus threat
is completely removed. Click
here for instructions.
- Make sure
your anti-virus software has current virus definitions. With
Symantec AntiVirus, double-click the yellow shield icon in
the lower right corner of the screen next to the time. Click
the Live Update button and follow the instructions.
- If you have shared
network folders, make sure they are set for read-only access.
Viruses can infect themselves in open shares.
- Do not run or view
e-mail attachments from untrusted sources, and be cautious installing "free" programs
that may be masked as spyware or other malicious software.
- Do not use peer-to-peer
programs (such as Limewire, KaZaA, Blubster, Morpheus, etc.).
Virus-infected files and vast spyware are shared to exploit
clients on these "free" networks.
