The following policies are intended to provide an enjoyable ResNet experience to all ResNet users and outline the terms of agreement for ResNet access. This is a supplement to the University’s Use of Computing Resources Policy.
Registrations
Computers and game consoles must be registered on ResNet in order to have Internet access. Registered devices no longer owned and/or used should be unregistered, as all activities that occur on a registered device are the responsibility of the person who has registered that device. The individual registering the device is solely responsibile for using safe computing practices. ResNet will attempt to contact the owner of a device by using information available in the UNI Directory. Any information that is hidden, inaccurate, or unavailable will impeed or prohibit communication from ResNet.
Additional Registrations
ResNet users are initally allowed one active connection each school year. Additional active registrations may be requested for special circumstances by emailing the ResNet Admin. Non-computer Internet devices (such as gaming consoles) may be registered through the manual registration process, but receive limited support by ResNet staff.
Network Connections
Switches, hubs, routers, and wireless access points are prohibited unless permitted by the ResNet Specialist. A room’s network jacks and wiring are not to be modified in any way. All network connections must be configured to use DHCP to obtain an IP address from UNI's DHCP server automatically. Static IP addresses are prohibited.
Servers
ResNet does not allow computers to be run as servers (web servers, game servers, FTP, etc.) to help curb bandwidth abuse and provide additional network security. ITS provides web and FTP server space available upon request.
Appointments
Requests for ResNet help should be made by calling 3-RSNT (3-7768). If the problem can not be resolved over the phone or by checking the ResNet web site, an appointment can be scheduled with an RCC to come to the resident's room. Students must be present for the appointment, otherwise the appointment will be cancelled and will have to be rescheduled.
Ethernet Card Installation and Support
RCCs will not install network cards without consent from the computer’s owner. Any work performed by the RCC will not hold the University or the RCC liable. Computers that do not meet the ResNet Minimum System Requirements are not eligible for ResNet support.
Viruses, Anti-Virus Software, and Patches
All Windows-based computers must run the most recent version of anti-virus software provided by UNI. If a computer is found to have a virus, the computer's owner will be contacted and appropriate action taken to prevent the spread and impact of that virus on the network. Additionally, all computers on ResNet must be kept updated with the latest security patches available. For Windows computers this means installing all Critical Updates from Microsoft's Windows Update. Computers missing these patches may be removed from the network to prevent the spread of viruses or infection.
Bandwidth Usage
Computers found to be using an excessive amount of bandwidth over a period of time, as determined by the University, may lose Internet access until the abuse is resolved. ResNet follows the University’s Internet Provisioning guidelines.
Bandwidth priority is given to web browsing traffic. File-sharing programs and other applications that are not consistent with UNI's academic mission receive limited bandwidth.
Copyright Violations
UNI does not monitor ResNet for copyright violations. However, it does comply with infringement notifications in accordance with the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). If notification is received of a copyright violation, the violator’s ResNet connections will be revoked and the user will be notified through their UNI e-mail account. The copyright violation process can be found here.
